Legal AI is the conversational research assistant at the centre of LEX ZED. You describe a problem or a question in ordinary language, and the assistant replies with a structured answer that separates the legal framework, the relevant authorities and the practical next steps. It is built for Zambian law specifically, which means it works from Zambian judgments and Zambian legislation rather than from general international material.
How it works
When you send a question, the assistant first searches the material LEX ZED already holds: judgments of the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, Court of Appeal and High Court, and the Acts and statutory instruments loaded into the legislation library. Anything it finds is passed to the model as verified text, so the answer is built on documents that exist rather than on recollection.
Where the internal library does not carry enough material, the assistant may consult approved public Zambian sources — the Zambia Legal Information Institute, the Judiciary of Zambia and the National Assembly of Zambia — and works from what those sources actually publish.
If a specific case is named and the platform does not hold the judgment text, the assistant says so instead of describing the case. This is deliberate: a plausible summary of a judgment nobody has read is the single most damaging thing an AI legal tool can produce.

Who it is for
Practitioners use it to orient quickly in an unfamiliar area before going to the primary materials. Law students use it to understand doctrine and to check whether they have identified the right issues. Members of the public use it to understand the legal shape of a problem — a dismissal, a tenancy dispute, a company registration question — well enough to know what to ask a lawyer.
Limits you should know about
- Legal AI produces legal information, not legal advice, and no lawyer–client relationship is created.
- Answers must be verified against the judgment or Act itself before being relied on in practice.
- Coverage depends on the documents loaded into the platform; gaps are disclosed rather than filled in.
